HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Sunday was check in day for the more than 275 delegates at Boys State on the Southern Miss campus.
The week long event brings together young men from around the state who have been chosen based on their leadership potential. During the week the students will learn about the political process and legislative proceedings. Several state and local officials will visit with the young men during the week.
Boys State is a nationwide program run by the American Legion since 1935 and is in its second year at USM.
"They are embarking on a huge challenge in the next couple of years and that's deciding where they are going to college," said Robert Murray, Boys State Director. " Boys State provides that. You do learn a lot about politics, but at the same time you get on a college campus. So I think it's a great experience for the delegates to see what college life is all about."
Boys State will conclude Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with an awards ceremony and a visit from Congressman Steven Palazzo.
