Laurel Mayor Melvin Mack swore in a new police chief on Friday

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel Police Deputy Chief Tyrone Stewart was sworn in on Friday as Laurel's new police chief.

Stewart has been in law enforcement for the last 18 years.

He started out at the Jones County Sheriff's Department as a jailer.

Stewart said after nine months of being at the jail he decided to attend the police academy.

He said after he graduated from the academy he joined the Laurel Police Department as patrolman and has worked his way up through the ranks to chief.
