Construction of FEMA storm shelter in Jones County underway

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Jones County Emergency Management held a ground breaking ceremony for a new hurricane storm shelter in Laurel Thursday morning.

Jones County officials have been working with FEMA on getting the storm shelter since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005

The FEMA 361 storm shelter will be located beside the Laurel fairground and will be built to withstand 200 mile per hour winds.

This is one of several shelters FEMA has built since Hurricane Katrina.
