HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Wesley Medical Center honored hundreds of accomplished Pine Belt ladies on Tuesday during their sixth annual Strong Women celebration.
Over 200 women were nominated by colleagues, family members and friends in a variety of categories. They are defender, leadership, mentor, perseverance and promise.
Nominees were selected from each of those five categories as award recipients for their positive contributions to South Mississippi. However, all of the women that were nominated were treated to lunch as part of the annual event at Hattiesburg's Lake Terrace Convention Center.
Meri Newell, a cancer survivor and longtime instructor at Jones County Junior College, was selected as the perseverance award recipient.
According to Newell, "I feel really honored and excited but I know there is a lot of people in this room that deserve this award as much or more than I did, and so I really feel honored."
Meri Newell will also be featured in the Thursday, May 26th, "Faces of Hope" profile that airs at 6 p.m.
