Laurel police chief says he's being forced to retire

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) Outgoing Laurel Police Chief Walter "Bear" Martin said he has been forced to retire after 33 years of service.

Chief Martin said city officials came and asked him to retire to save the city money.

He said he currently makes around $70 thousand a year with benefits.

Martin said if he didn't agree to the offer he could possible lose his job because he is not protected by the civil service.
