Hattiesburg pays tribute to the city's police officers

HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Hattiesburg's Mayor, Johnny DuPree, issued a proclamation Wednesday declaring it Peace Officers Memorial Day. The gesture was designed to honor those in blue that gave their lives protecting the Hub City.

During a police memorial service on the lawn of the department's downtown headquarters, four officers were remembered for their sacrifice and service. They are Officers Jessie James Everett and M. W. Vinson Junior along with Sergeants David Anthony and Jackie Dole Sherrill.

Additionally, the police department and city officials honored those officers currently on the force that risk their lives on a daily basis to keep the peace in Hattiesburg. Major Hardy Sims gave the welcome address at the service.

According to Sims, "We don't take for granted the sacrifices that these officers have made. You know everyday as law enforcement officers we go out into the public and we provide protection and we put our lives on the line for individuals that we don't even know most of the time."

Many of the Hattiesburg Police Department's fallen officer's family members attended Wednesday's service. Most of the relatives come to this event annually to remember their loved ones.
