MDOT holds Hattiesburg area "ITS" Stakeholder Meeting

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - MDOT held a "ITS" Stakeholders Meeting in Hattiesburg Tuesday to start developing a new master plan to improve surface transportation needs in the area.

ITS stands for Intelligent Transportation Systems. Recent improvements in using ITS are the new interstate message boards and Highway Advisory Radio Boards. These improvements will make a huge impact on travel should contra flow be enacted on Highway 59 due to an evacuation from the coast. They will also help advise motorists should an incident occur on one of the highways.

One of the things being looked at for the new master plan is the installation of adaptive signal systems in the City.

"It will be one of the first systems in the State of Mississippi here in Hattiesburg,"said Mike Stokes, ITS Program Manager. "We will integrate about 45 signals on US 98, Highway 49, and Hardy Street. This will allow for quicker driver times and less congestion and backup."

The meeting was intended by many local city officials, MDOT representatives, and first responders who have a stake in improving surface transportation in the area.
