Bond set for the two Jones County men involved in shooting death

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The two Jones County men arrested in connection with the shooting death of 27 year old Joseph Ross Shelton early Sunday morning in Ovett made their first appearance in court Tuesday afternoon.

Joseph Welch, 32 from Moselle is charged with hindering apprehension and obstruction of justice, both felonies. Jacob Johnson, 41 from Eastabuchie is charged with manslaughter. Justice Court Judge Howell Beech set Welch's at $20,000 on each count. Johnson's bond was set at $100,000.

According to the Jones County Sheriff's department the charge of manslaughter on Johnson came at the direction of the District Attorney's office.

"Since the time that these Gentlemen came into custody we've been in contact with the District Attorneys Office" said Major Don Scott, Jones County Sheriff's Department. "They reviewed all the evidence that we had and under their direction that is the charges we arrived at."

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist in the investigation.
