SANDERSVILLE, MS (WDAM) -A couple of new businesses have come to Sandersville since the Bok-Homa Casino opened its doors last December.
A ribbon cutting was held at a new business downtown Sandersville called "My Special Creation." Mayor Walter "Buzz" Jack said this is a sign traffic is picking up in the Jones County town just outside of Laurel.
Jack said, since the Bok Homa casino opened, the number of people traveling through the town has increased and all the fuss against the casino has decreased. "The whole situation turned out to be the best then for this area."
Jack said, the town is also seeing a positive impact in its tax dollars. "We are gaining tax dollars. We were gaining at slow rate and then we found out that our tax money had been diverted somewhere else. The state found out where. Last month we received a sizable check."
Jack said, he doesn't know exactly if the tax dollars were diverted to the city of Laurel or Jones County. He said, since the state has straighten the issue out and the town will soon know how much of an increase it can expect.
The Sandersville Police Department will also collect more money because of the increase of traffic stops.
Sandersville officials said they hope all the effects remain positive and they are excited about what the future might hold.
