Columbia man shot to death by deputies after chase

MARION COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Columbia man was shot to death by Marion County Sheriff's deputies early Wednesday morning after a high-speed chase.

Columbia Police said they were trying to serve a grand jury indictment to Howard Polk Jr., on charges of sale of a controlled substance. The high-speed chase ended about 1 a.m. when officers were able to ram Polk's truck at the intersection of Highways 13 and 35, forcing it off the road.

Polk is said to have opened fire on deputies who then returned fire and killed Polk. No officers were injured.

This is not the first time the Polk family has been involved with police. In 1989, Howard Polk Sr. shot and killed two Columbia police officers near the city courthouse. Officers Wayne Henebry and Billy Patterson were trying to serve a warrant on Polk Sr. for a domestic dispute. Polk Sr. was shot to death by his son, Howard, when he returned to his home on Dewey street.
