Hattiesburg facility responds to U.S. disaster victims

HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Hattiesburg is home to one of only seven strategically placed American Red Cross Disaster Field Supply Centers Nationwide.

Currently, resources from the massive facility are being used to aid Southern tornado and flood victims.

Located in the former Sunbeam plant in Hattiesburg, the center includes one million cubic feet of storage space. Inside, all kinds of supplies used to help disaster victims throughout the South are housed.

Recently this disaster field supply center has been used to aid tornado victims in Alabama and North Mississippi. Right now supplies are being sent to Tennessee and other areas impacted by the recent Mississippi river flooding.

Hattiesburg Red Cross officials said the disasters of Spring 2011 have been the largest they have responded to since Hurricane Katrina nearly six years ago.

The Disaster Field Supply Center was established after that hurricane due to the size of the warehouse and prime Hub City location.
