Bay Springs Guardsmen heading to Iraq

BAY SPRINGS, MS (WDAM) - Several dozen National Guard soldiers based in Bay Springs have left the Pine Belt for a year-long deployment, most of which will be spent in Iraq. More than 80 troops of Battery-A, 1/204th Air Defense Artillery left Jasper County Saturday morning, on their way to Oklahoma to mobilize for service in "Operation New Dawn."

The unit will join other batteries from the towns of Morton and Newton which are also being mobilized.

The unit has been called to active duty several times in the U.S. since the terrorist attacks of September 11th, but this is its first deployment overseas.

A total of more than 350 soldiers in the unit are being deployed to Iraq.
