LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The city of Laurel will have a new police chief at the end of May.
The city council voted five to two, confirming Deputy Chief Tyrone Stewart as Interim Chief effective May 28, 2011.
Several council members said they believe Stewart will be a great chief but they could not support his appointment because he'll remain under civil service protection during his time as interim chief; while other department heads in the city lack that opportunity.
" I understand the council concern but my main concern is my family and what is going to happen two, four six years on down the road," said Stewart. I have anywhere from 8 to 10 year before I retire and that is a long time and my most concern is family."
Current Chief, Walter Martin, is retiring on May 27th after 33 years with the department.
