Hattiesburg church celebrates a "New Beginning"

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The congregation of the former Temple Baptist Church East came together to celebrate a "New Beginning" with a new name change.

During a day of worship and activities a new sign was unveiled revealing the new name as Hardy Street Baptist Church. With the change the church becomes its own entity and is no longer linked with Temple Baptist West.

The church was established in 1907 as the 5th Avenue Baptist Church. They moved to their current location in the early fifties and the name was changed to Temple Baptist.

Despite the change, Transitional Pastor, Doctor Don Stewart says the church's ministries will remain the same.

"We've been the part of the Temple Baptist Church that had the international flavor and that part of our ministry will continue," said Doctor Stewart. "We will continue with the cooperation of the Spanish church, working with them and working with the Chinese bible fellowship and expanding that perhaps to include others as well."

Doctor Stewart added they want to be a ministry that focuses on the center of the city ministering to the people who are part of the Hattiesburg community.
