Hattiesburg volunteers take donations to Smithville

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Some volunteers from the Hattiesburg area headed north to the tornado-ravaged town of Smithville Saturday, bringing with them 2 trailers full of donations to help storm victims there. They left the Hub City carrying donations of food, water, clothing, toys and other items for that town in Monroe County.

The donations were dropped off Friday to Hattiesburg's Animal Medical Center.

Wednesday, a powerful tornado leveled much of Smithville, killing 14 people.

"We've got lots of items and Hattiesburg's got a huge heart," said Lorraine Stevens, adoption manager at Animal Medical Center and coordinator of the trip to Smithville. "The donations are still coming in," Stevens said.

She said donations can still be dropped off at Animal Medical Center. Volunteers are planning to head to Smithville again next weekend.
