Laurel police chief is retiring after 33 years of service

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel Police Chief Walter Martin will be retiring at the end of May, and if all goes as planned Deputy Chief Tyrone Stewart may be his replacement.

Laurel Mayor Melvin Mack confirmed that he will be asking the City Council to vote on naming Stewart as interim chief during the next council meeting. 

Mack said the Chief Martin has been with the department for 33 years and served the last 5 years as chief of police.

Chief Martin's last day on the job will be May 27th. Stewart may step in as in interim chief on May 28, 2011.

    The new Miss Hospitality has been crowned in Hattiesburg.  She is Emma Grace McGrew, 18, of Booneville.
