Columbia church using Katrina cottages to help single moms

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - A Columbia church is using the gospel of Christ and Katrina cottages to help needy single mothers with small children. Wednesday, a ribbon was cut to officially open Rediscovery Village.

That's a new ministry of Woodlawn Church.

It will provide transitional housing for single moms with kids. The village is made up of 15 former Katrina cottages which were given to the church by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

"We want to provide a safe environment for them and their kids and work with them to obtain their goals and see their families back on their feet and back involved in the community," said Jerron Carney, administrative pastor of Woodlawn Church.

The ministry will provide housing for the families for up to 2 years.
