Hispanics targeted in robberies

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - According to Hattiesburg police, there have been a string of armed robberies targeting Hispanics in Hattiesburg. Hattiesburg police reported two separate incidents of armed robbery and home invasion this weekend.

One of the incidents began late Saturday evening at a Chevron gas station on Highway 42, where allegedly, 4 black male suspects followed 3 Hispanic men to their residence on Geneva Street, then robbed them at gunpoint. One of the suspects was caught on video surveillance going into the Chevron, and the suspects were said to be riding in a tan colored Ford Taurus, also caught on camera.

The second incident occurred Sunday morning when allegedly 3 black male suspects went inside a residence on Cedar Street, pointing guns at 2 Hispanic males, demanding money. The suspects left the scene in a red Pontiac Grand Am with a Hawaiian lei hanging from the rearview mirror.

Hattiesburg police believe that Hispanics are being considered "easy targets" for robberies, because they are believed to carry a lot of cash. So far, there are no other leads in the investigation. If you have any information on either of these crimes, Hattiesburg police urge you to call Crimestoppers at 601-582-STOP, or 601-582-7867.

The WDAM First Alert Weather Team has enacted a First Alert Weather Day for the Pine Belt due to extreme heat this afternoon. This morning is not too bad as we start out with temperatures in the mid 70s, but this afternoon is going to be awful. The heat will get an early start as temperature reach the 90s before lunchtime. The humidity will make it feel more like the low 100s around that time frame but it doesn't stop there. Temperatures will continue to rise into the afternoon as hi...
