Hattiesburg Zoo celebrates Earth Day Sunday

HATTIESBURG, MS ( WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Zoo's EdZoocation Department held their annual Earth Day celebration Sunday afternoon.

Conservation theme activities taught teach children how to care for their environment.

"The purpose of Earth Day is to create awareness and appreciation for the earth's environment and the creatures that inhabit the planet, "said Krissy Hamilton, Zoo Educator. "It's important that we instill these values in our children at an early age so they can carry these ideas with them as they grow up and become integral parts of our communities."

Activities for the day included eco-friendly crafts and games. The zoo staff offered information about endangered species and families got the opportunity to learn conversation tips that they can use at home.

In addition to the zoo's activities, the Audubon Society held their annual event at the zoo. Children learned to identify and understand the differences between different species of birds.
