HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Music fans who love the tunes of the nineteen fifties are in luck. Southern Miss is getting ready to showcase the songs of that happening decade with the musical, "Smokey Joe's Cafe."
The production features the songs of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. They are the musical duo responsible for writing popular hits like "I'm A Woman" and "Poison Ivy," to name a few. The musical review features an ensemble cast of nine Southern Miss students.
Cast members like USM graduate student, Kimberly Morgan, have been rehearsing the production's numbers since February and are looking forward to positive audience reviews when the play debuts on Thursday night.
According to Morgan, "It's just been an amazing experience to sing music from the fifties and to be able to study musicians and performers from that day, and to try to live in that."
