Southern Miss welcomes new parking garage

HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - On the Southern Miss campus Thursday, both faculty and students welcomed a new fifteen point five million dollar five story parking garage.

The garage represents the first multi-level parking facility at Southern Miss. It was built by the Finlo and L and A construction companies in Hattiesburg, and is being financed through a consortium of five local businesses and a consultant.

The university is leasing the parking garage from this consortium for thirty years, at which time they will own the building. The lease payments are made possible through vehicle registration fees.

About 12-hundred spots are available in the garage, which boasts elevators, security lighting and handicapped parking. Southern Miss's President, Dr. Martha Saunders said the garage is part of university's master plan to improve the campus.

"Any university campus would be delighted to have 12-hundred new parking spaces but at Southern Miss we are especially needy of that. And I think our students will be pleased to not have to drive around so much and hunt for places," said Saunders.

The parking garage is open starting Thursday to Southern Miss faculty, staff and students that have paid the university's vehicle registration fee.
