Jones County officials assess damage following Monday's storms

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Jones County Emergency Management officials were out all day Monday assessing storm damage.

Information Officer Lance Chancellor said they are still waiting to hear from the National Weather Service to determine if Monday night's storms were straight line winds or tornadoes.  A NWS team will be conducting surveys in Jones, Lamar, and Forrest county Wednesday.

Chancellor said 16 homes, a couple of poultry houses, and an oil rig, were damaged in Jones County.

At the height of the storm, Dixie Electric reported over 3,500 customers without power in Laurel, Petal, and Waynesboro.

Red Cross officials are on hand assessing the damage and said if your home has not been assessed please contact your local chapter of the Red Cross.
