HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Monday on the Southern Miss campus, a group of young men donned high heels and went for a stroll to raise awareness about an important cause.
The "Walk A Mile in Her Shoes" event was designed to increase the public's knowledge about Hattiesburg's Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention and it's work to help victims of sexual violence.
Over 35 USM students wore stilettos and walked nearly a mile around campus to show their support for the center's work. The Shafer Center said both men and women can be victims of sexual violence. Kim Newell is the Director of the Shafer Center.
"So this gives men an opportunity to get out and do something and show some support for prevention efforts with sexual assault," said Newell.
Many of the walk participants were fraternity members, student athletes and other good sports. Some of the guys said they gained a new appreciation for women that wear high heels.
