JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Metal prices are high and petty larceny of scrap metal is on the rise.
According to Sheriff Alex Hodge scrap theft is on the rise in Jones County, and it is largely do to people wanting to turn scrap into cash.
Hodge says through the sheriff's department partnership with businesses buying and selling metal they are making several arrests of scrap metal thieves. Hodge says the department still needs the public to be on the look out. He says most of the thefts are happening out in the open and on private property.
"Most of these are happening in broad day light. Do not think that it is just nothing. Go ahead and take a look at it. By all means call you local law enforcement. Let us come out and check it, get a good vehicle description, and hopefully a tag number so we can follow up on it. If they see something laying around maybe an old boat. People are even pulling up fence posts, gates , mailbox, metal post all of these things. People are just taking anything they can get their hands own," said Hodge.
Hodge also advices that neighborhoods utilize its watch programs to protect the community against scrap metal theft.
