HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - More than 1000 students, faculty, and staff from 53 representing university organizations took part in the 2nd annual Big Event Saturday.
The event is a community wide service initiative at the university. It's sponsored by the Student Government Association as a way to thank the City of Hattiesburg and surrounding communities for their long time support of the university.
The volunteers were broke up into teams then sent out to several locations around the community to perform service work.
"You get a chance to do things for people, especially for the kids out here," said Erick Brown, President of the SGA. "You get to give what we've been blessed with back to people who haven't been blessed as much."
With it's large number of participants, the Big Event is considered the biggest one day student managed service project in the state.
