Birthday Bash, Hattiesburg Zoo celebrates 61 years

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Folks from all over the Pine Belt turned out Saturday to help the Hattiesburg Zoo celebrate it's 61st anniversary.

The event featured four mini birthday celebrations throughout the day at the four different continents represented at the zoo. Also several artists and bands performed as part of the Zoological society's Zoo Blues on a stage just outside the Zoo's gates.

In recent months the zoo has been working on adding new attractions, two of which, a remodeled carousel and a splash pad, were unveiled.

Hattiesburg Director of Tourism Rick Taylor said both of them were a huge hit with the crowd. He added that more attractions will be unveiled later this year and more new exhibits will be added in the future.

"We want new exhibits.  We want to develop the backside of the lake," said Taylor. "The way we do that is by people coming out and enjoying and supporting the zoo. We have to keep in mind that this is very unique for a city our size to have a zoo at all and certainly one of this quality."

Taylor said he expected to far exceed the 4000 people who passed through the gate at last years Birthday Bash.
