Hattiesburg police captain may waive right to an arraignment

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)-A suspended Hattiesburg police captain is expected to waive his right to an arraignment after being indicted by a grand jury.

As 7 on your Side reported Thursday, Captain Jamie Hooker was indicted on charges of embezzlement by a public official. The longtime law enforcement officer was placed on administrative leave without pay last October as a result of an internal investigation into missing police evidence.

We are told a television set, seized as evidence and intrusted to Hooker by virtue of his public employment went missing, and was allegedly given away unlawfully by Hooker.

Even though Hooker is on leave without pay, he's still getting a check from the city in the form of vacation time. City officials confirm Hooker has accrued nearly 1400 hours in vacation time.

Court officials say Hooker showed up at court this morning and picked up his paper work to waive his right to an arrangement. No new court date has been set.
