HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Big Event, a community wide service initiative at USM takes place Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Over 1000 Southern Miss students, faculty, and staff will be out in the community performing service work at several different locations around the campus and Hattiesburg community.
Volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. at Pride Field where they will be greeted by USM President Martha Saunders, Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Paul, and Head Football Coach Larry Fedora. They will then go out into the community to perform service work at the various locations.
The event is sponsored by the Student Government Association who says the event is a way to say thank you to the City of Hattiesburg and surrounding communities for their continued support of the university.
The Big Event is in it's second year and with it's large number of participants it is considered the biggest one day student managed service project in the state.
