Affordable housing in Lumberton gets a facelift

LUMBERTON, MS (WDAM) - For the past two years a housing development for low income families on the west side of Lumberton has been getting a facelift.

The property was acquired by the Mississippi Housing Authority in 2004 who then began looking at ways to improve the property. After a three year assessment work began to completely remodel each of the homes.

The property consists of 48 two and three bedroom units, both single family homes and duplexes.

The remodeled units are designed to be affordable housing for families whose income is up to 80% of the average median income. The primary criteria to qualify to live in one of the homes is proof of income.

"We do a background check on criminal activity of course," said J.P. Lawrence, Executive Director of the Mississippi Housing Authority. "We don't do a credit check and mainly it's the income.

Rents for the homes vary based on income, but will not exceed 30% of a persons income.

Lumberton Mayor Miriam Holders sees the project as a great boost for the community.

"This means a great deal to Lumberton that we now have affordable housing rental apartments that stand second to none," said Holder. "They are well equipped for the community."

Work continues on some of the units with project completion expected sometime in the fall.

    Leakesville mom of three Cynthia Havard remembers the day her second child was born. She said they almost died.

    "It was just an excruciating pain and then just a lot of blood," Havard said. "They told me that they almost lost both of us."
