FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Andre Cooley was reinstated Monday as an employee of the Forrest County Sheriff Department after he sued for discrimination.
A settlement was reached between the sheriff's department and the American Civil Liberties Union concerning Cooley's cases.
ACLU Attorney Bear Atwood said this was the first case of its kind in the state wherein an employee sued a public body for discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
"Cooley is confident in returning to work," said Atwood. She added, "The sheriff department has agreed to clarify and make it absolutely clear in writing that they do not discriminated based on sexually orientation in their workplace."
