PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Employees of a Petal retailer are hoping you will help send local World War II veterans on a special trip to Washington to view some of the nation's most important war memorials. Thursday, employees of the Petal Wal-Mart sold hamburgers and accepted cash donations for the "Honor Flight Network."
That organization flies World War II veterans to the nation's capital for tours of the National World War II Memorial and other sites. The Mississippi Chapter is planning an inaugural flight in May.
They hope to take up to 90 veterans on the trip.
"What we're trying to do is we're trying to make sure that they can go to Washington, D.C. To see these memorials that are dedicated to them," said Derek Berryhill, assistant manager for the Petal Wal-Mart.
That first flight is set to take off from Gulfport on May 11th.
