HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Some Hattiesburg-area residents learned some valuable life-saving skills Saturday free-of-charge, at an event honoring a congresswoman who was the victim of a recent assassination attempt.
They got some basic CPR and first-aid training at Southern Miss as part of the American Red Cross' "Gabrielle Giffords Honorary Save a Life Saturday."
Giffords is the Arizona congresswoman who was wounded by a gunshot last January. Quick action by a staffer with American Red Cross training helped save her life.
"The Gabrielle Giffords team is very excited that the Red Cross is doing this and they did a huge event on capitol hill a couple of days ago, so it's been a nationwide thing, but we're able to localize it here in Hattiesburg," said Samantha McCain, development and communications officer with the American Red Cross of Mississippi.
Training like this took place at more than 100 locations across the nation today, including 3 other cities in Mississippi.
