HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Hundreds of Hattiesburg students from the W. H. Jones Head Start Center celebrated Mardi Gras on Tuesday with a first of it's kind "Krewe of Kids" parade at the school.

The students danced to fun music and picked up beads and other trinkets from a slow moving caravan of decorated cars. Folks from the city's P.A.C.E. Head Start central office organized the event and representatives from all departments participated.

Organizers said because W. H. Jones is Hattiesburg's largest Head Start Center, it made sense to host the parade there for the students. Many of the kids and school officials got in the spirit of Fat Tuesday by wearing the traditional colors of gold, green and purple.

Kim Gowdy is the Parent Involvement Coordinator with P.A.C.E. Head Start and helped plan the parade.

"Everybody who is involved with P.A.C.E. Head Start wanted to get together and show our kids you know this is your day, we are going to have fun and just enjoy the Mardi Gras spirit," said Gowdy.

Gowdy said Head Start officials plan to host the parade again next year and continue the tradition of celebrating Mardi Gras.
