Collins receives economic stimulus from Reader's Digest

By Karrie Leggett

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -  In a weak economy, every town needs a little stimulus and the city of Collins got just that.

The Reader's Digest Ambassadors made a stop in Collins and presented Mayor V. O. Smith with a $1,000 check this morning.

The presentation was part of the Reader's Digest "We Hear You America" tour. During the 100 towns in 100 days tour, each city is given a check to help out its economy.

Collins was chosen because of e-mails Reader's Digest received from citizens expressing pleas for help and pride for the city.

The mayor said the city is excited to receive the money and to put it to good use at the fire department.

"Well, we was very surprised last week. We got this e-mail saying that we had won this thousand dollar award, and we were very thrilled about it," said Smith.

Collins is one of five cities in Mississippi to be award the Reader's Digest grant.
