NEW ALBANY, (WDAM) - A Covington county man who was wanted for rape has been captured in north Mississippi. The accused criminal has a lengthy rap sheet and was out on bond for burglary and escape when the alleged rape occurred.
George Gowan of the Hopewell community was apprehended in New Albany this afternoon by U.S. Marshals. Gowan reportedly has a girlfriend in New Albany and authorities were able to trace his whereabouts through cell phone records. Covington county officials say Gowan apparently made his way to New Albany in a car he stole in Jones county. We are told Gowan had just been released from prison after serving a 30 year sentence for rape. Sources tell us Gowan may also face rape charges in New Albany.
