Pride of the Pine Belt: T. J. Burkhalter

PETAL, MS. (WDAM) - T. J. Burkhalter is busy doing what he loves best, working as an Engineer at the Petal Fire Department's station one.

According to Burkhalter, "It's just the thrill of getting in the big red truck and going down the road, I love it."

Burkhalter was recognized as the city's "Fire Fighter of the Year" earlier this February during a Chamber of Commerce banquet. He was nominated by his colleagues at the fire house like Battalion Chief Mike Rigby.

"Everybody likes him, nobody has ever had anything bad about him to say, whether it be joking or whatever. He just jumps in and does what needs to be done without ever being asked, he's just a great guy," said Rigby.

As a member of the Petal Fire Department, Burkhalter said he feels good about being able to help fellow citizens in need and he also spends lots of time making sure the department's equipment is tip top shape for when a call for assistance comes in.

"I like doing the job, I'd do it even if I wasn't Fireman of the Year. It's the same job. It's just a thanks from the city," said Burkhalter.
