LUMBERTON, MS (WDAM) - More than 150 Federal Emergency Management Agency trailers were destroyed in a fire outside of Lumberton in Pearl River County Thursday.
The fire apparently was started when strong winds blew sparks from a debris fire on an adjacent property. Smoke from the fire was visible from Hattiesburg, and witnesses report propane tanks exploding at the FEMA trailer storage site every few seconds.
Firefighters from Poplarville, Pearl River County, Lamar County and Lumberton were on the scene spraying down trailers not yet burning and removing other trailers out of harm's way. No serious injuries have been reported, but several firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
Electricity to the area was cut for about an hour. About about 400 customers were affected.
There were over 175 trailers on the site left behind after being brought to the area to serve as temporary housing after Hurricane Katrina.
