Comcast to switch Laurel to digital-only format March 1

The following is a press release from Comcast:

LAUREL, MS - Comcast will convert the Laurel area cable system to a digital-only format beginning March 1, which frees bandwidth for more HD content, faster Internet speeds, and other new products and services.  Once the conversion takes place, customers will need equipment on every outlet in their home.

The conversion will affect customers in Laurel, Ellisville, Sandersville, Heidelberg, Jones County, and the areas of Jasper County served out of Laurel.  Customers will be converted in two phases, with the subsequent conversion planned for March 9.

"Customers have been notified of the changes with two letters and two postcards and we have had field personnel placing digital equipment in customer homes as well," said Mike Davenport, Director of Operations for Southern Mississippi.  "Residential customers will receive one complimentary digital converter for each household, and two complimentary digital adapters (DTAs) for additional outlets," he added.  Customers will be charged for equipment needed for the 4th and higher outlets.

A DTA is a one-way device that enables Comcast to give the customer the Digital Starter lineup on additional outlets.  It is a very small device that easily plugs into any TV set and uses a Comcast provided remote control.  The DTA's do not provide VOD or any other interactive services.  Customers who place the DTA on additional outlets anytime after March 1 will immediately receive the channels on the Digital Starter lineup.
