HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A man once convicted of a brutal crime and sentenced to life in prison finally has his name cleared after more than 30 years.
Circuit Judge Bob Helfrich filed an order formally exonerating Larry Ruffin who was one of three men accused of the rape and murder of Eva Gail Patterson of Forrest County Back in 1979.
Ruffin died in prison in 2002 and his family has been fighting to clear his name ever since new DNA evidence proved none of the three men actually committed the crime.
The other two men were released from prison last year, one has since died after his battle with cancer. The same DNA evidence pointed to another man, Andrew Harris, as the real suspect.
Harris was indicted for the crime in December.
