Brush fires continue to be major problem for area firefighters

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Firefighters through out the Pine Belt spent most of Sunday dealing with numerous brush fires.

In Lamar County, five fires were reported including one on Baxter Road near Lumberton that burned well over 100 acres and kept firefighters at the scene for hours.

A twelve acre fire in the Glade Community was sparked by an unattended controlled burn.

In both counties firefighters were further hampered by having to wait for the Mississippi Forestry service to arrive with plowing equipment. With so many fires the forestry service was having difficulty getting to the scenes and in some cases help was called in from other counties.

Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna said that with the dry and windy conditions people should not burn if at all possible.

"We are encouraging the public not to do any burning at all," said McKenna. "We don't want to put on a burn ban, but if it continues we're going to have to."

Fortunately the only structures burned in the fires were a shed and unoccupied trailer.
