HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Physicians, nurses and others in the South Mississippi medical community are trying to develop a new network of care for patients who suffer a severe form of heart attack. A Regional STEMI (ST elevation myocardial infarction) Care Symposium Saturday on the Southern Miss campus was hosted by the Mississippi Healthcare Alliance.
That's a grassroots group of volunteers working to improve heart attack care in our state.
Organizers are developing support for a standardized statewide system of care for patients.
"This meeting is about bringing everybody who cares for heart attack patients together, to figure out ways that we can work together as a team better, to deliver faster care and the proper care all the time," said Dr. Robert Wilkins, an interventional cardiologist and member of the Mississippi Healthcare Alliance.
Emergency medical services personnel and pharmaceutical industry representatives also attended the event.
