HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A bill to name a portion of Interstate-59 in South Mississippi in honor of mothers whose children have died in service to our nation has passed the Senate and is awaiting action in the House. Senate Bill 2501 would designate the portion of I-59 from Picayune to Hattiesburg as the "Mississippi Gold Star Memorial Highway."
The Gold Star represents a military serviceperson who has died serving the country. Marvin and Liane McCall of Hattiesburg suggested the bill to legislators after seeing a similar highway dedication in the state of Maine.
The McCalls' grandson, army sergeant Daniel McCall, was killed in action in Iraq in 2007.
"A lot of the mothers are not honored as they should be," said Marvin McCall. "I see a lot of things where the soldiers are honored, but you know, none of the mothers are honored and this would really honor the people behind the soldiers, which is the mother," he said.
McCall said it could still be a couple of months before the bill passes the House.
