Ethics Commission rules against Hattiesburg Police in Hunt Club complaint

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Mississippi Ethics Commission said Wednesday the Hattiesburg Police Department did not follow state law in providing information about a shooting incident in November involving three University of Southern Mississippi football players.

The ruling comes as a result of a complaint filed by WDAM-TV over an HPD incident report about the Nov. 14 shooting at The Hunt Club in Hattiesburg.

The report contained no narrative about what happened that night. State law says an incident report is a public record and must contain a narrative description of the alleged offense.

In its response to the complaint, HPD said it had developed a non-investigative incident report which included the minimum information required by law.  According to Wednesday's ruling, the department must change the format of its incident report forms to include a narrative description in compliance with section 25-61 of the Mississippi code.

In addition, it must provide WDAM-TV with a narrative of what happened at The Hunt Club in November.
