PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Smoke from several controlled burns in Perry County forced the closure of a portion of Highway 98 East and Highway 29 in New Augusta overnight.
Highway Patrol officials said the smoke caused poor visibility and resulted in four traffic accidents, including one involving three tractor trailers and another vehicle. Only one minor injury was reported in the four accidents.
The U.S. Forestry Service reported the burns were prescribed burns by State and U.S. Forestry personnel as well as private property owners.
Smoke from the fire was visible as far away as Highway 59 in Hattiesburg and Highway 42 in Petal.
Both Highway 98 and 29 were reopened shortly after 9:00 a.m. this morning. Officials are urging motorists to use caution as smokey conditions still exist.
