CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - Retired Marines from the Commiskey-Wheat Marine Corps League presented the U.S. Marine Flag to the Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby during a ceremony Monday morning.
The flag was placed in the Medal of Honor Room of the museum next to a new display honoring Medal of Honor recipient Jack Lucas. The display is one of several new displays at the museum.
Lucas was awarded the Medal of Honor in October of 1945 by President Harry Truman. He was awarded the medal for his heroism in Iwo Jima when he used his body to shield three members of his squad from two grenades and was nearly killed when one exploded.
He became the youngest member of the military to receive the Medal of Honor in any conflict other than the Civil War.
"He would have been very proud if he was here today," said Ruby Lucas, Widow of Jack Lucas. "In this place that they have made here is just absolutely wonderful. This really touches my heart. It's really great. All these marines have come here today are real good friends and I really appreciate them."
Later in life lLucas made Hattiesburg his home before passing away in June of 2008. Today would have been his 83rd birthday.
