Petal Rotary Club gifts dictionaries to third graders

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Members of the Petal rotary club paid a visit to third grade classes at Petal Elementary School Tuesday morning with gifts in hand.

Each of the students were given a copy of Merriam-Webster's Intermediate Dictionary. More than 300 dictionaries were given out free of charge to the students.

Members of the Petal High School Interact Club assisted the Rotary Club members in passing out the dictionaries.

The dictionaries are an annual gift to the students in an effort to help stamp out illiteracy.

"Not only adult illiteracy, but also helping children to find the world of reading," said BarbaraMauldin, President of the Petal Rotary Club. "Reading is so important to advanced education and going on and being able to work in this world of ours toward each others goals."

At the end of the school year the students will be permitted to take the dictionaries home as their very own.
