Hub City Classic brings dance teams from 3 states

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of dancers and cheerleading squads from 3 states gathered in Hattiesburg Saturday for a first-ever, statewide championship. Nearly 700 competitors from Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana took part in the inaugural Hub City Classic Cheer and Dance Championship at the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

Dancers ranged in age from 3-years-old to adults.

Winners in each category qualified for the International All-Level Championships in Atlanta.

"Our dance is all different styles, the lyrical dance and technical dance, they do hip-hop, which you see on tv a lot," said David Hanbery, CEO of Deep South Spirit, Inc., which is promoting the event. "The cheer leading routines you see are all-star routines, so they're all skill-based...a lot of tumbling and stunts and acrobatics and things like that," Hanbery said.

He said he hopes to make the Hub City Classic an annual event.
