HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Southern Miss's Accelerator facility is preparing to welcome a new branch of a multi-national company.

The Accelerator is the university's business incubator for early stage science based companies. The 26 million dollar building off Classic Drive in Hattiesburg features over 60-thousand square feet of high tech space and research tools for nine companies. Sunny Webb Corral is the Executive Director of the Accelerator.

According to Corral, "They can create the new formulation here, they can develop the formulation within the building, they can apply it to a product, and then we actually have the space here on site that they can scale it up to commercial production levels. At the end of the building we have a shipping dock, where they can load it onto a truck and actually ship it to a customer."

A new addition to the Accelerator is Bracco Diagnostics. Based in Italy, the company's Hattiesburg branch will produce a specialized lotion for soldiers to protect them from chemical warfare agents. Bracco Diagnostics plans to hire an initial staff of ten people and begin production of their lotion this summer.

The Accelerator is currently at 80 percent capacity and has the ability to support as many as twenty companies.
