Benefit & Cooking Auction for Samantha Skidmore Feb. 4.

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Calhoun Community Center in Laurel will host a Benefit and Cooking auction for Samantha Skidmore on Feb. 4 beginning at 10 am.

Skidmore, 22, was diagnosed with Nodular Sclerosis Hodgkin's Lymphoma II B, a cancer of the blood, on Jan. 7. Skidmore does not have health insurance and the benefit will help with medical expenses and travel for the family.

The benefit will be selling whole smoked Boston butts and pulled pork plates with a day filled with family fun events.

There will be an auction at 7 p.m. and people are encouraged to bring items new or old for donation.

    The Wayne County School District has received a $900,000 grant from the state for a new academy to help students who may have fallen behind. The school district says the STAR Academy is a "drop-out prevention" and "catch-up" type program that will be implemented in fall of 2017.
