LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Some Oak Grove elementary school students are teaming up to help another Oak Grove student with an ambitious project to help people suffering from eye diseases in Africa. Fifth graders at Oak Grove Upper Elementary School will spend part of next week collecting dozens of pairs of sunglasses.
They'll be donated to the Eyes of Love project. That's a ministry founded by Oak Grove High School student and Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen Christina Bostick. The sunglasses will be donated to the country of Nigeria, to help people there who are suffering from serious eye diseases and injuries.
"My father went on a mission trip to Eku, Nigeria with some men from my church and when he came back, we were all just broken about the situation over there and I immediately wanted to do something about it, because the thought of anyone going blind just really breaks my heart," said Christina Bostick.
"We sent some e-mails to some companies and we already have 100 pairs already donated," said Ansley Brent, a student council president at Oak Grove Upper Elementary School. "So, I think we're going to do really good," Ansley said.
The students will be accepting donations all next week. Their goal is to collect at least 900 pairs of sunglasses.
